The State of Kuwait plans to dedicate prior attention to humanitarian causes when it assumes the non-permanent membership seat at the United Nations Security Council effective January, said Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah on Wednesday.

Kuwait will play an effective and influential role at the humanitarian level when it assumes the post for a 2018-2019 mandate, said the deputy foreign minister at a seminar, held at Saud Al-Nasser Al-Sabah Diplomatic Institute.

This approach will be adopted against backdrop of the UN designation of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Humanitarian Leader and the State of Kuwait as a

Humanitarian Center, he said at the symposium, attended by Amiri Diwan Advisor and Kuwait's former delegate at the UN, Mohammad Abulhassan.

Humanitarian plights are currently among the Security Council priorities, in shadow of prevalent conflicts across the globe.

Kuwait has won support of 188 UN member states in its quest to occupy the seat, he said indicating that its performance would be in line with the longtime rational and balanced foreign policy.

Al-Jarallah added that the Kuwaiti envoys would coordinate with their colleagues from the other member states to avert flare-up of conflicts and strifes.

It will play mediation role and seek to resolve strifes with peaceful means, he said noting its role in efforts to resolve the conflict in Yemen.

Kuwait, which had hosted talks among the Yemeni parties for three months, planned to ensure success of the forthcoming conference for re-constructing Iraq, due in February.

The deputy foreign minister criticized the Security Council for being inactive toward various global issues and vowed to help small countries play an effective role at the international organization.

For his part, Abulhassan underline crucial role of the council during the Iraqi aggression on Kuwait particularly after Kuwaiti diplomats succeeded in placing the cause under UN Chapter VII.

Kuwait this year will be representing the Arabs at the council and next year either Tunisia or Morocco will join Kuwait in the UNSC.

However, Abulhassan has hinted that the Council ability to resolve some key global issues is limited.
